And the Winner Is...
a comedy
by Mitch Albom
Directed by Richard Purro
15th to 26th March, at 8 pm
Titirangi Theatre, Lopdell House, Titirangi
Matinee performance Sat 19 March at 2 pm, & Sun 20 March at 6 pm
Quirky, heartfelt and slightly wicked, this new American play is about a middle-aged actor struggling for recognition. He finally gets nominated for a best actor Oscar, only to die before the ceremony.
He wakes up in purgatory, which happens to look like an Irish pub. Outraged at his bad luck and determined to know if he wins, he bargains with a gatekeeper to return to earth for the big night.
Along the way, he drags his agent, his acting rival, his girlfriend and his ex-wife into the journey, in a wildly twisting tale of Hollywood, the afterlife, and how we are judged.

Director Richard Purro says, “I came across the play by accident last year and liked it immediately for both its broad comic style and its life affirming themes.
Certainly it is a spoof on egotistical actors, and Hollywood’s love of giving itself awards, but it is also a deeper look at why it’s important for all of us to get our house in order before it’s too late.”
Well-known Titirangi actor John Goudge has the delicious leading role of Tyler, Brendon Smith is at last able to speak his own native tongue on stage as Seamus, an Irish bar-tender. Rochelle Cowie returns as Sheri, and we welcome newcomers Penny Low (Serenity), Chad Edwards (Kyle Morgan) and Paul Roukchan (Teddy La Petite).
Richard is himself an award winner: his production of 84 Charing Cross Rd for Pilgrim Theatre won a number of awards in the Auckland Community Theatre Trust festival, including that of Best Director.
