Alexander’s poetry, ‘Punk Settlers’, will be performed, read, included in visual art and available in hand-made books, Tiny Titles, which she makes from clean, found paper including old envelopes, atlases, brown paper bags and redundant science books.
Raewyn Alexander links Early NZ Settlers and Punk Rock in, “I Guess I Just Don't Know” (quote from Lou Reed's, Heroin),
“One exciting moment occurred when I put two punk bands on Captain Cook's ship, re-writing history
is intoxicating. The Scavengers and The Suburban Reptiles on The Endeavour…I believe it happened.
Who else would Cook have as sailors?"
Alexander will be in the gallery to discuss her work and to encourage others make their own poetry from words cut from newspapers. They may keep the results, destroy them or place them on display. Some audio poetry will also be played during the exhibition.
Workshops:
For over 15 years, Alexander's taken workshops with many successes. She'll run two different workshops on the two Saturdays over this fortnight.
The first workshop (Sat 28 May) includes performance techniques, Noise Noise Noise, where apparent disorder, randomness and chaotic elements are used to excite inspiration.
The next workshop (Sat 4 June), Writing with Fire, is about accessing emotions safely, how to control and order thinking, create what we want by using language. Alexander will teach relaxation techniques and refine voices, people may also create poetry on the day.
At the end of each workshop Alexander will also offer advice on publishing and any difficulties you have with your own writing.
Both workshops are six hours long, 10am – 4pm, tea, coffee and juice provided, bring your own lunch (one hour for lunch), they will be in the gallery and you need paper, pens and enthusiasm.
$50, limited to eight participants. Please ring Raewyn on (09) 846 1757 or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to book
